Light in plinth 7, 2015

Light in plinth 7, 2015 is a programmed LED light shaft installed within a white powder coated aluminium cube on top of the large concrete plinth in The Edinburgh Gardens in Clifton Hill. It was part of the Globelight 2016 public art group show. It began during the evening light before sunset on December 31st, 2015, and continued through the night until early morning, January 1st, 2016.

The slowly colour changing light shaft was programmed to circle the plinth at ground level, then horizontally at mid-level and then at a higher level at the treetops. This sequence then went in reverse, high to low, then again low to high, and so on continuously. It slowly and continually circled the ground, mid, high, mid, and ground space around the plinth.

Children would chase the light beam as it swept slowly across the expanded space around it. Adults would step over it as it passed or let it pass over them. It was a mesmerising steady visual, a colour changing light shaft stretching out over space. The lowest circle of movement was closer into the plinth mapping the ground and plants. The horizontal circling allowed the shaft to stretch as far as it could. The highest circle of the shaft mapped trees or in open space where there were no trees, it was again allowed to stretch out as far as it could be seen. It was strongest in the dark as it stretched further into space. It dominated where previously other objects were seen.
